Annual Evidence Update on Chest Pain: 23-27 February 2009

An update of the evidence on this topic from the NLH Cardiovascular Diseases Specialist Library.

The Chest Pain annual evidence update (AEU) 2009 updates the previous AEU published in February 2007.

Chest pain is a common reason for patients seeking healthcare, often as an emergency. But not all chest pain is cardiac in origin, and (for example) the proportion of patients calling for an ambulance with chest pain who have proven heart attack is low – less than 10% in some studies. We have identified key systematic reviews and related documents to support clinicians and commissioners in identifying the best available, current evidence on this topic. NICE are due to publish guidance on chest pain in December 2009.

The Update includes commentaries from an Expert Group, chaired by our Clinical Lead, Professor Tom Quinn, from the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Surrey.

National Knowledge Week on Proteinuria and the Use of eGFR: 9-13 June 2008

An update of the evidence on this topic from the NLH Kidney Diseases Specialist Library.

The NLH Kidney Diseases Specialist Library is pleased to announce its first National Knowledge Week - as a unique resource it will provide expert opinion and evidence updates on key topics in chronic kidney disease: Proteinuria and the use of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).

These will include:
* Basic science of urinary protein excretion
* Clinical aspects of proteinuria and eGFR
* Management of proteinuria and reduced GFR

The National Knowledge Week is aimed at all NHS health professionals with an interest in chronic kidney disease, and will include user-friendly summaries written by relevant experts, with links to guidelines, reviews and primary research. National Knowledge Week on Homeopathy: 9-13 June 2008

An update of the evidence on this topic from the NLH Complementary & Alternative Medicine Specialist Library.

The 2008 annual evidence update on homeopathy aims to present the most up-to-date evidence. We have searched a large number of databases for studies published since April 2007. The update includes a summary of recent research on the use of homeopathy and selected systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials (RCTs).

National Knowledge Week on Skin Cancer: 5-9 May 2008

An update of the evidence on this topic produced by the NLH Cancer and Skin Disorders Specialist Libraries.

The National Library for Health (NLH) Cancer Specialist Library and Skin Disorders Specialist Library are holding their first National Knowledge Week on Skin Cancer from Monday 5 May until Friday 9 May 2008. This event is being arranged to correspond with Sun Awareness Week and Euro Melanoma Day, which is on 5 May this year.

The National Knowledge Week is particularly aimed at NHS health professionals, and will highlight sources of information and guidance on skin cancers and their treatment.

Included as part of the Knowledge Week will be the Libraries’ first Annual Evidence Updates on Melanoma and Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer, which brings together the results of a comprehensive search for systematic reviews published over the last three years.
There will also be commentaries from invited experts discussing new evidence and recent developments in a wide range of skin cancer topics.

National Knowledge Week on Childhood Obesity: 28 April - 2 May 2008

The National Library for Public Health is holding its first National Knowledge Week (NKW) and Annual Evidence Update on childhood obesity from 28th April 2008. The week coincides with the launch of the new public health library.

The NKW has been undertaken with the new National Obesity Observatory. Focusing on childhood obesity surveillance and preventative public health interventions, the knowledge week includes an evidence update to the NICE guidance of 2006 and key policy documents. There are also number of guest editorials written by experts, which provide a snapshot summary of preventative interventions for childhood obesity and international surveillance activities.

National Knowledge Week on Rheumatoid Arthritis: 21-25 April 2008

An update of the evidence on this topic produced by the NLH Musculoskeletal Specialist Library.

The management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has improved dramatically over recent years. This has been driven by our greater understanding of the pathological processes that underlie it. It is particularly exciting to consider that inducing remission in RA is now a realistic goal – something that would have been unheard of in the past.

The RA National Knowledge Week provides an excellent opportunity to highlight some of these achievements in the form of concise reviews and summaries from leaders in their fields with topics selected by a panel of experts. The items are covered under the broad headings of basic science (with a focus on how advances in laboratory work can help us understand disease); clinical aspects (emphasising the fact that RA does not only affect joints but also cause problems in other parts of the body); drug treatment (how and when we should best treat this condition); other treatment modalities (reminding us that other therapies such as physiotherapy may be very important in RA) and surgery (whilst used much less as a treatment for RA today, surgery can play a very important role).

These advances in understanding and treating RA, summarised in these articles, have resulted in a vastly improved outlook for patients today.

The Colorectal Cancer National Knowledge Week 2008 update will run from 7th to 11th April and will coincide with Bowel Cancer Awareness month. Content for the Knowledge Week will include an annual evidence update on causes, risks and prevention, assessment and diagnosis, treatment and disease management and service delivery and standards for colorectal cancer. Annual Evidence Update on Prostate Cancer: 10-14 March 2008

The NLH Cancer Specialist Library will present its National Knowledge Week on Prostate Cancer from 10th March. It will cover the evidence on the following aspects of prostate cancer:

The NLH Skin Disorders Specialist Library is holding its second National Knowledge Week and Annual Evidence Update on Acne Vulgaris (common acne) from 3rd until 7th March 2008. This year the search for newly published evidence for the Annual Evidence Update has been extended to randomised controlled trials as well as systematic reviews. Also included is a range of commentaries that interpret the clinical significance of the new evidence, a mapping by topic of systematic reviews on acne published since 1999, and links to a range of other information sources on acne.

National Knowledge Week on Bipolar Disorder: 10-14 December 2007

The 2007 Bipolar Disorder Annual Evidence Update is a collection of the latest research on developments in bipolar disorder that has arisen over the past year. The Annual Evidence Update follows on from our Bipolar Disorder Knowledge Week 2006, which in its turn was an update of the evidence appraised in the July 2006 NICE guideline.

Topics will include updated evidence on: pharmacological and psychosocial interventions for acute depression, acute mania and maintenance treatment; self-harm and suicide; substance misuse; and children and adolescents. We are also introducing four new areas covered by evidence published in 2007: later life; genetics; mood disorders and migration; and psychosocial issues.

All mental health professionals will find something of relevance and interest during the Week. The Mental Health Specialist Library encourages users to feedback via the ‘contact us’ form on the website.

National Knowledge Week on Patient Safety: 26-30 November 2007

The National Knowledge Week considers the issue of patient and public involvement in patient safety. Firstly it reviews how involvement is defined. It then looks at the way patients, their families and carers, and the community could be involved. It seeks to identify current initiatives which encourage involvement and if there is evidence that these have succeeded. During our National Knowledge Week the Patient and Public Involvement Specialist Library will be exhibiting at the NHS Centre for Involvement Conference.

National Knowledge Week on Glaucoma: 19-23 November 2007

The Glaucoma National Knowledge Week provides an opportunity to bring together a collection of up-to-date evidence and information on developments in glaucoma clinical care that has arisen over the past year. Topics will include epidemiology, screening, current trends in medical management, optic disc imaging, assessment of visual field progression, patient education, living with glaucoma and low vision services. Any specialist or generalist health professional involved in eye care should find something of relevance.

The term “glaucoma” for the purposes of the knowledge week is used to cover primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and normal tension glaucoma (NTG). Ocular hypertension is also included as it is a strong risk factor for developing glaucoma.
