An update of the evidence on this topic from the NLH Patient and Public Involvement Specialist Library.

This Annual Evidence Update considers the issue of patient involvement in patient safety, which can be defined as: the actions that patients take to reduce the likelihood of medical errors and/or the actions that patients take to mitigate the effects of medical errors when they do occur. The Annual Evidence Update looks at the ways in which patients can help to improve patient safety, and also at the willingness of patients to perform safety-related behaviours.

National Knowledge Week on Patient Safety: 26-30 November 2007

The National Knowledge Week considers the issue of patient and public involvement in patient safety. Firstly it reviews how involvement is defined. It then looks at the way patients, their families and carers, and the community could be involved. It seeks to identify current initiatives which encourage involvement and if there is evidence that these have succeeded. During our National Knowledge Week the Patient and Public Involvement Specialist Library will be exhibiting at the NHS Centre for Involvement Conference.

Online resource to support patient and public involvement in healthcare

A comprehensive collection of current knowledge and evidence about patient and public involvement in healthcare is now available in the Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) Specialist Library run by the King’s Fund for the National Library for Health.

Managers, researchers and students will be able to access, free of charge, all the latest information on user involvement in areas such as policy development and self-care, and on strengthening NHS accountability to patients and to local communities.

The aim of the PPI Specialist Library is to support the implementation of patient, user, carer and public involvement in health care by providing access, in one location, to the best information available.
