NHS Evidence - women's health will launch its next Annual Evidence Update (AEU) on Monday 28 February. Focusing on both endometriosis and dysmenorrhoea, the AEU aims to provide clinicians with the latest evidence on the management of these two conditions. We know it is very difficult for busy health professionals to keep up-to-date with the huge volume of literature that is published each year and so the specialist collections are here to do this for you.

This is the fifth Annual Evidence Update on Acne Vulgaris produced by NHS Evidence - skin disorders, with the results of a search for new guidelines and systematic reviews on acne published or indexed since the last Annual Evidence Update in March 2010. There is also a "what's new" analysis by Dr Rosalind Gait and Professor Hywel Williams, discussing the new evidence and its implications for clinical practice.

Annual Evidence Update on Parkinson's Disease: 14-18 February 2011

An update of the evidence on this topic from NHS Evidence - neurological conditions.

The Neurological Conditions Specialist Collection is launching its second Annual Evidence Update on Parkinson’s Disease on Monday 14 February 2011.

The Neurological Conditions Specialist Collection Project Team has carried out a systematic literature search on Parkinson’s Disease (PD) to identify all high level evidence published since the date of the last searches for the Parkinson’s Disease guideline published by SIGN in January 2010. Leading PD experts from around the UK have read and appraised the evidence for its validity and relevance to the busy clinician. A list of the papers deemed worthy of inclusion, along with expert commentaries by our reviewers, will be freely available on the site at www.library.nhs.uk/neurological from 14 February. This year we have continued to identify uncertainties in research to contribute to the DUETs project (see www.library.nhs.uk/duets for more details).

Annual Evidence Update on Urinary Incontinence: 31 January - 4 February 2011

An update of the evidence on this topic from NHS Evidence - kidney diseases and male urogenital disorders and NHS Evidence - women's health.

The Kidney Diseases and Male Urogenital Disorders Specialist Collection and the Women's Health Specialist Collection have identified and reviewed new evidence on the diagnosis and management of urinary incontinence published during the last 12 months. The Kidney Diseases and Male Urogenital Disorders Specialist Collection presents evidence published since the release of the NICE guideline on Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms which has been reviewed by urologists from the Churchill Hospital in Oxford, and the Women's Health Specialist Collection provides an update on the latest evidence on the management of female urge urinary incontinence/overactive bladder and the pharmacotherapy, surgical and conservative management of female stress urinary incontinence.

We know it is very difficult for busy health professionals to keep up-to-date with the huge volume of literature that is published each year and so the specialist collections are here to do this for you.

NHS Evidence - trauma and orthopaedics in conjunction with NHS Evidence - musculoskeletal have produced an Annual Evidence Update on Spinal Diseases. Annual Evidence Update on Headache: 13-17 December 2010

An update of the evidence on this topic from NHS Evidence - neurological conditions.

The Neurological Conditions Specialist Collection is launching its third Annual Evidence Update (AEU) on Headache on 13 December. The Project Team has carried out a systematic literature search on headache to identify all high level evidence published since the date of the last Headache AEU in August 2009, including guidelines, systematic reviews, health technology assessments and economic evaluations. Leading headache and migraine experts from around the UK have read and appraised these for their validity and relevance to the busy clinician. A list of the papers deemed worthy of inclusion, along with expert commentaries by our reviewers, will be freely available on the site. Annual Evidence Update on Familial Hypercholesterolaemia: 13-17 December 2010

NHS Evidence - genetic conditions is publishing its second Annual Evidence Update on Familial Hypercholesterolaemia on 13 December 2010. It is over two years since NICE clinical guidance 71 Identification and management of familial hypercholesterolaemia was published and the topic continues to generate interest among healthcare professionals. This update includes a list of relevant guidelines, systematic reviews, meta-analyses and selected randomised controlled trials published in the last year, together with a commentary written by a relevant expert.

The fourth Annual Evidence Update on CAM for Low Back Pain will be published on 13 December. This update aims to present a comprehensive collection of up-to-date information that has been subject to rigorous selection criteria. Annual Evidence Update on Malignancies Post Kidney Transplant: 6-10 December 2010

An update of the evidence on this topic from NHS Evidence - kidney diseases and male urogenital disorders.

The 2010 update of the Annual Evidence Update on post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD) will be live on the 6 December 2010. We have reviewed the literature for relevant systematic reviews, randomised controlled trials and cohort studies, and assessed the impact of this new evidence published since the introduction of the BSH/BTS guidelines for the diagnosis and management of PTLD which were published in June 2010.

Annual Evidence Update on Alcoholic Liver Disease: 6-10 December 2010

An update of the evidence on this topic from NHS Evidence - gastroenterology and liver diseases.

NHS Evidence – gastroenterology and liver diseases will be publishing its second Evidence Update on alcoholic liver diseases on 6 December 2010. Alcohol misuse produces a spectrum of liver injury ranging from simple fatty change through alcoholic hepatitis to cirrhosis and, in some 20% of individuals, to hepatocellular carcinoma. We will be presenting an overview of the best systematic reviews from the past year, along with commentaries from experts in the field. We will also provide links to useful policy documents and other items of interest.

Annual Evidence Update on Special Care Dentistry: 30 November - 3 December 2010

An update of the evidence on this topic from NHS Evidence - oral health.

NHS Evidence - oral health presents its third Annual Evidence Update on the topic of Special Care Dentistry. The 2010 Update is published to coincide with meetings of the two professional societies for special care dentistry (British Society for Disability and Oral Health and British Society of Gerodontology). Annual Evidence Update on Stroke: 30 November - 3 December 2010

An update of the evidence on this topic from NHS Evidence - stroke.

Following on from the last Annual Evidence Update in November 2009, this update for health professionals and patients will present significant advances in knowledge about stroke rehabilitation. Topics will include organisation of care, upper limbs, mobility, speech and language, basic personal needs, cognition and perception and living with stroke. There will also be a section on uncertainties identified and, as usual, expert summaries will be included to help make sense of the new evidence presented.

Annual Evidence Update on HIV/AIDs: 30 November - 3 December 2010

An update of the evidence on this topic from NHS Evidence - infections and NHS Evidence - National Library for Public Health.

To coincide with World Aids Day on 1 December NHS Evidence - infections is launching its Annual Evidence Update on HIV and TB co-infection and the National Library for Public Health (NLPH) will be publishing its Annual Evidence Update on HIV/AIDS - Behaviour change in high-risk populations.

The Annual Evidence Update from NHS Evidence - infections will focus on HIV and TB co-infection, with guidelines, systematic reviews and other evidence that has emerged in the last 12 months. Experts in the field have written commentaries, and links to useful websites are also provided.

Expert commentaries include:
  • The global overview of HIV and TB co-infection
  • An overview of the BHIVA guidelines for treatment of HIV and TB co-infection
  • Clinical implications of HIV and TB co-infection for GPs
  • An overview of HIV and TB co-infection in the UK
  • Diagnostic tests and guidelines.
The Annual Evidence Update from the National Library for Public Health will identify and contextualise all high-level evidence and guidelines published in the last 12 months on behaviour change interventions in high-risk populations including ethnic minorities, gay men, injecting drug users, commercial sex workers, and other populations. The NLPH has teamed up with experts in the field of sexual health to evaluate the evidence.

Annual Evidence Update on Supportive and Palliative Care in Chronic Lung Disease: 22-26 November 2010

An update of the evidence on this topic from NHS Evidence - supportive and palliative care.

This Annual Evidence Update addresses supportive and palliative care issues in people with chronic respiratory disease and will focus on two of the most important issues for patients with pulmonary problems. The first is dyspnoea (or breathlessness). This symptom is usually one of the most prevalent in surveys of problems associated with respiratory and also many other systemic illnesses. The second specific topic is cough, which is less common but can nevertheless be just as distressing for patients with cancer and other chronic conditions.
