The 2010 Update is published to coincide with meetings of the two professional societies for special care dentistry (British Society for Disability and Oral Health and British Society of Gerodontology). The Update brings together new guidance and systematic reviews relevant to Special Care Dentistry that have been published since the last update, accompanied by a commentary on the evidence.

Annual Evidence Update on Head and Neck Cancer: 1-5 November 2010

An update of the evidence on this topic from NHS Evidence - cancer, NHS Evidence - ENT and audiology and NHS Evidence - oral health.

NHS Evidence specialist collections for cancer, ENT and audiology, and oral health will launch the first collaborative Head and Neck Cancer Annual Evidence Update on 1 November 2010.
The update will include key guidance and quality appraised systematic reviews published since the SIGN guidance, combined with expert commentaries on the following topics:

• Causes, risks and prevention
• Screening
• Assessment and diagnosis
• Treatment and disease management
• Service delivery and standards.
  

Additional therapeutic uncertainties will highlight research gaps and there will be links to relevant high quality patient information.

To mark the start of National Smile Month 2009 (www.nationalsmileweek.org/), NHS Evidence – oral health is presenting an Annual Evidence Update covering all aspects of oral health. The specialist collection team has conducted a systematic search of a wide range of databases to identify the best available evidence (guidance and systematic reviews). This update will be complemented over the coming months by several specialised evidence updates focusing on particular aspects, including periodontology, special care dentistry and oral cancer.

Annual Evidence Update on Special Care Dentistry: 8-12 September 2008

In recognition of the new consultant speciality of Special Care Dentistry, the Oral Health Specialist Library is presenting a new Annual Evidence Update that identifies relevant, high quality information published in this area. The speciality has been defined as: 'the improvement of oral health of individuals and groups in society who have a physical, sensory, intellectual, mental, medical emotional or social impairment or disability or, more often, a combination of these factors'. The update also features reviews of two specific areas of interest identified by oral health professionals: bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw and antibiotic prophylaxis in bacterial endocarditis.

National Knowledge Week on Oral Health: 19-23 May 2008

An update of the evidence on this topic produced by the NLH Oral Health Specialist Library.

The Oral Health Annual Evidence Update will run from 19-23 May 2008 to coincide with the launch of National Smile Month (http://www.nationalsmileweek.org/). Having systematically identified and critically appraised evidence published since the beginning of 2007, the Library will present summaries of this new research across all fields of Oral Health. Key resources including systematic reviews and evidence-based guidelines will be highlighted in an editorial looking at developments over the last year.
