Annual Evidence Update on Retinal vein occlusions: 14-18 March 2011

An update of the evidence on this topic from NHS Evidence - eyes and vision

NHS Evidence – eyes and vision are pleased to present the Retinal Vein Occlusions Annual Evidence Update (AEU) during the week commencing 14 March. The update looks at new evidence that has emerged since the 2010 AEU, for which guidance from NICE and the February 2009 interim guidance from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists formed the benchmark.

In December 2010 the Royal College of Ophthalmologists issued revised Interim Guidelines for Management of Retinal Vein Occlusion, with methodological advice provided by the Eyes and Vision Specialist Collection Management Team. In 2010 NICE issued NICE Interventional Procedure Guidance IPG334. Arteriovenous crossing sheathotomy for branch retinal vein occlusion.

The update is restricted to systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials (RCTs). The RCTs of note concerning the treatment of macular oedema in retinal vein occlusion are the SCORE, CRUISE, BRAVO and OZURDEX studies.

Annual Evidence Update on Amblyopia: 27 September - 1 October 2010

An update of the evidence on this topic from NHS Evidence - eyes and vision.

Clinicians treating ophthalmic disease in children always have to consider, and often have to manage, amblyopia - either as the main disorder causing impaired vision or as a contributing condition. The 2010 Annual Evidence Update focuses on the clinical and functional outcomes of amblyopia and highlights the:

· clinical outcomes of treatment - focusing on aspects of visual acuity, stereopsis, and ocular alignment;
· functional outcomes of treatment - focusing on aspects of quality of life and visual functioning;
· adverse events of treatment;
· new evidence that is likely to inform a change in clinical practice;
· current uncertainties in the effectiveness of treatments.

Commentaries have been provided by Jugnoo Rahi, Reader in Ophthalmic Epidemiology/Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist, Institute of Child Health UCL; Jill Carlton, Research Associate, ScHARR, University of Sheffield and Mike Clarke, Reader in Ophthalmology, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Annual Evidence Update on Age Related Macular Degeneration: 14-18 June 2010

An update of the evidence on this topic from NHS Evidence - eyes and vision.

Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is one of the commonest causes of certifiable visual impairment in the UK. The 2010 Evidence Update focuses on the management of neovascular (wet) AMD and highlights the:

  • key evidence base underpinning current interventions (key randomised controlled trials and current guidance);
  • new evidence that is likely to inform a change in clinical practice;
  • emerging evidence for Lucentis, Avastin and combination treatments from key RCTs that have recently reported at scientific conferences but not yet published in peer reviewed literature;
  • current uncertainties in the effectiveness of treatments.

Commentaries have been provided by Robin Hamilton, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Praveen Patel, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and by Angela Reidy and Darwin Minassian, EpiVision.

This update will present the evidence published since the 2008 update on the following topics:

  • Diagnosis,
  • Monitoring/follow up,
  • Treatment (medical, surgical and laser),
  • Patient education,
  • Service provision,

Annual Evidence Update on Age Related Macular Degeneration: 15-19 June 2009

An update of the evidence on this topic from NHS Evidence - eyes and vision.

The Age Related Macular Degeneration Annual Evidence Update (AEU) will be available from 15 June 2009. A collection of the evidence that has emerged since the 2008 AEU will be presented under a number of topics reflecting aspects of the care pathway. The evidence will be categorised into secondary publications (systematic reviews and meta-analyses), interventional studies (randomised control trials and clinical control trials) and observational studies. The emphasis of the AEU will be on the sight threatening or visually impairing forms of age-related macular degeneration.

Annual Evidence Update on Glaucoma: 24-28 November 2008

An update of the evidence on this topic from the NLH Eyes and Vision Specialist Library.

The Glaucoma Annual Evidence Update will present a collection of evidence that has emerged in the 12 months since last year's update.

The term “glaucoma” for the purposes of the update is used to cover primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and normal tension glaucoma (NTG). Ocular hypertension will also be included, as it is a strong risk factor for developing glaucoma. Angle closure glaucoma, paediatric glaucoma and the secondary glaucomas will not be included in this update.

The evidence will be categorised into secondary publications (systematic reviews and meta analyses), interventional studies (randomised control trials and clinical control trials) and observational studies.

Annual Evidence Update on Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD): 16-20 June 2008

The Age Related Macular Degeneration Annual Evidence Update 2008 presents a collection of evidence that has emerged in the past 12 months since the 2007 National Knowledge Week (NKW).

The term Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is used to cover both wet and dry forms of the disease AMD. The dry form of the condition is also known as geographic atrophy and the wet form of the condition is also known as neovascular AMD. The emphasis of this AEU is on the sight threatening or visually impairing forms of AMD.

Searches were limited to the period February 2007 to May 2008 and the findings are presented through a number of topics reflecting the care pathway. The evidence has been categorised into secondary publications, interventional studies and observational studies. Links to the full text articles are provided where available and links to PubMed abstracts in all other cases.

NKW for Age Related Macular Degeneration: 18-24 June 2007

Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the commonest causes of certifiable visual impairment in the UK. There have been significant developments recently in our understanding of its underlying cause; in the options for therapeutic and surgical intervention; and in detection and diagnosis through emerging technology for retinal imaging; all of which have transformed the clinical management of a patient with AMD.

The AMD National Knowledge Week serves to provide a collection of the evidence and information on these recent developments in the clinical management of AMD. This is presented through a number of topic summaries reflecting aspects of the care pathway, including the patients’ perspective. Each summary is presented with on-line links wherever possible to cited references for current evidence and new knowledge (systematic reviews, primary research, and patient information). Printable versions of topic summaries are available, and of all the Specialist Libraries, the Eyes and Vision Specialist Library uniquely provides a low vision accessible web version of its NKWs.

Topics covered by the AMD NKW include:

Epidemiology - Dr Jennifer Evans

Genetics – Mr Andrew Webster

Emerging technology: Retinal imaging for diagnosis - Ms Samantha Mann
  • Ocular coherence tomography (OCT)
  • Auto-fluorescence (AF)
Developments in treatment:

  • Therapeutic intervention : anti-VEGF therapy - Mr Yit Yang
  • Surgical intervention : macular translocation – Mr Lyndon da Cruz

Low vision aids and AMD - Jane Macnaughton

Living with AMD - Macular Disease Society / EVSL Management Team
